Origins of Water Bubblers

People who have attended a school, played in parks, or been to a city will recognize that water bubblers are a well-known feature in many places. They are often located in lakes, parks and rivers, and they are often found in schools, too. What is the story behind this particular characteristic?

The roots of the term

Interestingly, the origins of the term "bubbler" are not actually native to the Bay State. It was developed in Wisconsin and is still utilized in a few areas of the Great Lakes Region.

Although the bubbler wasn't the first, Bubblers it was the first to use a spherically designed valve to let water flow into the air to create the effect of bubbling.

Although the term bubbler has been used to refer to a specific category of products but it is still used in the states of Oregon, Rhode Island and the eastern region of Connecticut. The majority of residents are unaware that the term "bubbler" is being employed in other parts of the country.

The Bubbler was invented by Harlan Huckleby in 1888 in a small Wisconsin town. Harlan Huckleby, who worked at the Kohler Co., designed the product. The original design was not thought to be safe. To improve public health, a new, more efficient design was designed.

The most important aspect of the bubbler wasn't its ability to make bubbles but the spherically designed valve that allowed the water to flow out from the nozzle. This invention was a major step forward in the quest for clean drinking water.

It is not known which the source of bubbler originate from. Some historians believe that the word was created in Milwaukee which is which is where it is believed have originated. Although the bubbler might have been invented in Milwaukee, the term was not used in Milwaukee until 1912, five years after the first fountain was installed in the city.

Some people claim that the "bubbler" term was a ruse. Others believe it was an attempt to rebrand the spherical, bottle-shaped bubbler that has been around for a long time.

Origins in Portland Oregon

The Portland Water Company was founded in 1862 and was the first water company to offer service to Portland. The company also made water faucets, and patented a bubbler. They also began to service Westbrook, Cape Elizabeth, South Portland.

The Portland Water District purchased the company in 1908. The District initially served the Portland downtown area, but they later extended their services to South Portland and Cape Elizabeth. The Bureau constructed a hydration station in 1916. By 1917, 20 fountains were added to the system.

The Benson Bubblers are a trademark of Portland. They are a four-bowl font made of brass and created by A.E. Doyle famous architect. The bubbler was originally cast at $500. Eventually, the bubbler was used as a trademark of Kohler Water Works. Kohler Water Works company.

A little over a hundred years later the original Benson Bubbler is still in use in some parts of Oregon, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, and Australia. While some are in Portland and others are located on the east side however, the majority are located along the Columbia River.

According to the Portland Water Bureau the Benson Bubbler uses less than 10 percent of the city's daily water consumption. In reality the Bureau has made major changes to the Bubbler design to conserve water. They have installed timers that shut down the fountains during periods of low usage, and flow-restricting equipment to reduce the amount of water used.

There are 52 four-bowl Benson Bubblers currently available in the downtown Portland area. Other single-bowl variations are scattered throughout the city, which range from Linnton to Sellwood. The Water Bureau has 74 single-bowl fountains.

The four-bowl Benson Bubblers have become a symbol for the city of Portland and many residents believe that the fountains ward off loggers from saloons. The fountain was donated to the city of Portland by Simon Benson, a philanthropist and businessman.

Schools and origins
