America's s third largest railroad union has rejected a deal with employers, renewing the possibility of the first major strike since 1992. 
If the union does not accept a deal with the Biden administration by November 19, a costly strike could start Thanksgiving week. The chokehold on America's railways would cost billions in damage to the economy and make supply chain issues even worse. 
Last month, when a strike appeared inevitable, it was revealed it could cost the nation $2 billion a day and spark chaos for hundreds of thousands of travelers as regional agencies planned for stoppages while Amtrak cancelled all long-distance trains. 
Over half of track maintenance workers represented by the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division who voted opposed the five-year contract on Monday. Union president Tony Cardwell called it 'record' participation, with about 12,000 of the union's 23,000 members voting. 
BMWED has now set a deadline of November 19 to get a deal done before a strike would take place - just days before an increase in holiday travel, according to the union's Facebook page.
The two larger unions for about 55,000 conductors and engineer, Southern , and Virginia were preparing for service stoppages ahead of the threatened September shutdown, while Amtrak, the nation's cross-country railway system, canceled all planned trips, including those from Washington to Sanford, , and the Silver Star from New York City to Miami. A potential rail strike would also choke supplies of already scarce computer chips and other car parts, cutting off the delivery to auto assembly plants, which could force temporary shutdowns at some of America's auto plants.
It would also disrupt the flow of completed new cars and trucks to dealers throughout the country, 75 percent of which move by rail.
According to an  study published in September, everything from delivery delays (a single car on the average freight train carries 2,500 UPS packages), to plant shutdowns, to food (the average rail car carries enough wheat for 260,000 loaves of bread) and climate with more people forced to take the highways could be affected.
