The most significant feature of the bubbler was not its ability produce bubbles, but rather the valve with a shape that was spherical, allowing water to flow from the nozzle. This invention was a major leap forward in the pursuit to obtain clean drinking water.

It is unclear the exact origins of the word bubbler come from. Some historians believe the term was invented in Milwaukee the city the city where it is believed to have come from. Although the bubbler might have been invented in Milwaukee however, the term was not widely used in Milwaukee until 1912, a year after the first fountain had been installed in the city.

Some claim that the term "bubbler" was a flagrant fraud. Others contend that it was merely a rebranding of the bottle-shaped spherical shape that was in use for a long time.

Origins in Portland, Oregon

The company was founded in 1862. Portland Water Company was the first water system to provide service to the entire city of Portland. The company also made water faucets, as well as patented bubblers. In addition, they began to serve Westbrook, Cape Elizabeth, and South Portland.

The Portland Water District purchased the company in 1908. The District initially was a service for the Portland downtown area, but later expanded their services to South Portland and Cape Elizabeth. In 1916, the Bureau built a hydration facility and by the year 1917, they had added 20 fountains to the system.

The original Benson Bubbler, which was invented in 1912, is being used in parts of Oregon and Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Australia, and elsewhere. While there are some installed in Portland and some are located on the east coast but the majority are located along the Columbia River.

According to the Portland Water Bureau the Benson Bubbler uses less than 10 percent of the city's daily water needs. In fact, the Bureau has made significant modifications to the Bubbler design in order to save water. They have installed timers to block fountains during off-peak periods and flow-restricting devices that reduce the amount of water used.

There are 52 four-bowl Benson Bubblers currently available in the downtown Portland area. There are other single-bowl versions scattered throughout the city, ranging from Linnton to Sellwood. The Water Bureau maintains 74 of the single-bowl fountains.

The four-bowl Benson Bubblers are a symbol for Portland. Many locals believe that the fountains helped keep loggers from going to saloons. The fountain was given to the city of Portland by Simon Benson, water bubblers a philanthropist and businessman.

Schools and origins
